Brighton Digital Festival

Research & Evaluation

Context

Brighton Digital Festival (BDF) is a celebration of digital culture in all its forms that has taken place across Brighton & Hove every autumn since 2010. Originally conceived out of the collaboration between leading digital and digital arts organisations in the city, the festival has successfully grown year on year. BDF operates on an open programme model; most events are organised and produced by individuals meaning the Festival’s personality is determined by the good ideas of the people who contribute to its programme, rather than one organisation or individual’s vision. The Festival has a broad reach, welcoming audiences and organisers from across the south of the UK.

It was announced in 2020 that BDF will continue in a different format in the future, with digital media development organisations Wired Sussex and Lighthouse continuing to curate different elements.

Challenge

When we were first appointed to work with Brighton Digital Festival, in 2016, there were significant challenges around funding and sustainability as well as governance and core messages on purpose and identity.

always possible was appointed to evaluate the 2016 festival – consulting with audiences, event organisers and commissioners – making recommendations around an ongoing impact assessment framework, governance and structure and engagement strategy.

We continued to work with the festival in 2017 and 2018, improving data collection methods, and supporting event organisers to better measure the impact of their own events against agreed ambitions. In 2018, we undertook a full review of the festival’s corporate sponsorship structure and relationships, interviewing key corporate partners such as EDF Energy, Vodafone and Legal & General in order to map out a more long-term approach to mutually beneficial partnership.
